  Chris Finocchario, from Macedon, NY, drove home in front of the largest crowd this year, at Spencer Speedway, to win the Dave London Memorial. Finocchario made a perfect night of it, winning his heat race, redrawing the pole starting position and leading every lap in the 50-lap event.   It was make up night at Spencer last Friday. What started out on Friday, August 11, then rain delayed, was completed last Friday. Daryl Lewis Jr. picked up his 14th career Sunoco Modified feature win at Spencer. A.J. Montgomery won the Grandpa Dog Four Cylinder feature.   Rain again?? You’ve got to be kidding. But this time the rains fell after qualifying had started. The third modified heat was on the track when the rains fell. It was decided to complete this program next Friday, August 18. There were twenty-four Super Stocks on hand along with 18 NASCAR Sunoco Modifieds, 10 Super Sixes and 8 Grandpa Dog four cylinders. The heats for the Grandpa Dog 4 cylinders remain, along with the completion of that third modified heat.   ”It’s been one of those years,” stated promoter John White. “We just can’t get a break with the weather on Fridays.” This quote can be probably attributed to any northeast promoter who has a track operating on Fridays or Sundays. The wet weather just continues to win out. Last Friday, sever thunderstorms ranged free around central and western New York forcing many tracks to cancel racing for the evening.   Amy Catalano, from Ontario, NY, returned to victory lane after nearly a year’s absence from winning at Spencer Speedway. “With the luck I have been having, I’ve been wishing for 2017 to just go away,” commented Amy. “The older I am getting the harder these wins are coming.” In the Super Sixes, Brandon Allen repeated in that division’s 20-lap feature.   After four weeks off, mostly due to “Mother Nature”, she decided to cooperate. That is at least 90% of the time last Friday at Spencer Speedway. Following the modified main, sprinkles of rain began to fall. But the Grandpa Dog 4-cyclinder cars gutted it out through their 15-lap feature.   It just keeps raining on Fridays in the Northeast. Spencer Speedway had to cancel it’s racing program on June 30th due to heavy afternoon rains. It was the fourth time in the last seven Fridays that racing had to be canceled due to the weather. Spencer Speedway is off this coming week, July 7. Racing returns on Friday, July 14, with the return of the New York Super Stocks, plus the three main NASCAR divisions at Spencer take to the half mile oval; the NASCAR Sunoco Modifieds, Super Sixes and Grandpa Dog 4-cylinder Scorpions.   For the third time in 2017 Spencer Speedway officials have been forced to cancel racing at the famed half mile oval. The first two occurrences were due to wet grounds and flooded pit area. Last week the pits were flooded and water kept running across the front stretch.   It’s been an extremely wet Spring this year. Heavy rains poured down around the Rochester area on Thursday afternoon and evening causing flooding around the flat half mile Spencer Speedway oval. “We waited as long as possible but we can not get all of the water off the front stretch,” stated race director Dave Johnston. “The area between the wall and the track just seems to have more water flowing up all the time.” Due to this situation NASCAR racing for June 16th has been canceled.   Tommy Catalano picked up his tenth NASCAR Sunoco Modified feature win at Spencer Speedway last Friday.   Heavy all day rains on Thursday have forced track officials to cancel racing on Friday, May 26. “The grounds are just too wet,” commented track promoter John White. “We have puddles all over the grounds. The track will be ok, but no one can get in and park.” This will set the stage for the RoC modifieds to take to the track on Friday, June 2. Joining the full blown modified teams will be the New York Super Stocks in their first appearance at Spencer in 2017. Last year Bob Frisbee Jr. won the Super Stock opener at Spencer.   The 63rd auto racing season at Spencer Speedway will get underway Friday, May 12, with their annual Test & Tune session. Pit gates open at 3 p.m., allowing competitors the opportunity to sign in, obtain their 2017 NASCAR Licenses and check out the competition. On track action will start at 5:30 p.m., with round by round practice runs. Runs will continue until daylight ends, usually around 8 p.m. Last year six separate divisions were on hand, including the weekly Sunoco Modifieds, Super Sixes and the “Grandpa Dog” 4-cylinders. Spencer Speedway Posts Tentative 2017 Schedule by Gary Spaid
  Race fans will see a number of changes taking place at NASCAR’s Upstate New York racing home, Spencer Speedway. The biggest change is the starting times. Unlike in the past when 7:30 was used, the new weekly starting time (unless specified) will be 7:15 p.m. Pit gates will open at 4 pm, followed by the general admission gates at 5:30 pm. Race practice will start at 6 p.m. weekly. “Grandpa Dog” is the new weekly sponsor for the Four Cylinder division. Michael Heimes, better known to the local racing community as “grandpa”, had been a fixture at Spencer Speedway for years.   On Saturday, November 12, 2016, the 62nd annual Spencer Speedway awards banquet took place at the Palmyra VFW. Following dinner awards were presented to both the NASCAR and NHRA drivers present. Colleen D’Hondt started the ceremonies off with the invocation. She remembered the late Gary Montgomery for all his contributions to Spencer Speedway. Topping the list of award winners on the night was the 2016 Sunoco Modified track champion, Kevin Timmerman. Racing Cancelled Due To Weather Extremes by Gary Spaid
  Racing last Friday, August 12, was canceled due to extremes in the weather. The Rochester region has been plagued by drought conditions starting nearly a month ago. With temperatures reaching into the mid-nineties and the 50% possibility of moisture during the afternoon, officials decided to canceled racing on both Friday and drag racing on Saturday. Spencer Speedway will be hosting The Dave London 50 for Super Stocks on Friday, August 19. London competed in the full fender division at Spencer throughout his short career. His last win at the track came in 1997. He was instrumental in starting the Rochester area auto racing boosters club, known as R.A.C.E.R....   Full Story

  In six starts this year Kevin Timmerman, from Ontario, NY, has had six top five finishes, but no wins this year at Spencer Speedway until last Friday. “I am glad I had Amy behind me,” stated Timmerman. “She is the owner of my RoC ride and I knew I could trust her to not knock me around.” In New York Super Stock action, Jim Steffenhagen from Fairport, NY, grabbed the lead on the first lap from his outside pole starting spot and led all 25-laps to claim his first Super Stock feature win at Spencer this season.   Defending series champion Tim Gullo was a man on a mission at Spencer Speedway on July 22nd. The series has been very competitive this year and he has been caught up in some wrecks. Determined to turn his luck around, he won his heat and then led all 25 laps of the feature. But the trophy and first place bragging rights ended up going to Mitchell Wright from Henrietta, NY. The post- race inspection determined that the heads on the Gullo machine didn’t follow the rule book. Mitchell Wright has been a bridesmaid several times this year.   Afternoon rains pounded Central New York last Friday. The end effect was second rainout of the season for Spencer Speedway. NASCAR Racing returns Friday, July 15, featuring Kids’ Bicycle races. Kids are expected to have a helmet and sign in at the office by 6:50 pm. They will get a chance to compete with other kids in their same age bracket before the NASCAR cars hit the track. NASCAR racing that night will include the Sunoco Modifieds, Super Sixes and 4-Cylinder Scorpions classes. Race time begins at 7:30 pm.   Afternoon rains pounded Central New York last Friday. But it had little effect on race fans as Spencer Speedway had a planned night off of racing. With just a little less than half the 2016 season completed at Spencer Speedway, Daryl Lewis Jr., from Ontario, NY, is the point leader in the potent Sunoco Modified division. Lewis currently has won twice, the last one a surprise when race leader Mike Leaty made contact with a lap car in the final turn, on the final lap of the race.   Racing on Friday, May 27, was canceled due to standing water around the flat Spencer Speedway half mile oval. The rains feel so hard officials at the track could not see Route 104 from their office building. The month of June at Spencer starts off with a special. This coming Friday, June 3, Spencer Speedway will be the RoC Modifieds, plus the NYS Super Stocks in a 25-lap feature. Race time begins at 7:30 pm. The Race of Champions dates back to 1951.   When asked by the announcer if he would be the first to be glad he ran American Racer Tires, NASCAR Sunoco Modified feature winner, Daryl Lewis Jr., responded, “That’s a big 10-4”.   Forty-two cars turned out for the annual Test & Tune session at Spencer Speedway last Friday to start the 62nd season of oval track racing at this fames flat half mile oval in upstate New York. Daryl Lewis Jr. turned in the fast time in the RoC Modifieds. He turned in a 91.231 mph lap. In the Sunoco Modifieds Mike Leaty turned in the fast lap, 88.669 mph. Mitchell Wright took top honors in the Super Stock class, with a lap of 79.646 mph. The Super Sixes had the most cars on hand. Barrett Schenk turned in the fastest speed with a lap of 68.441 mph. Dutch Hoag, Long Time Local Legend Passes by Gary Spaid
  One of the true legends of local auto racing has passed, Donald “Dutch”” Hoag. Hoag became a local legend in the 50’s and 60’s. Dutch passed away at home with his faithful dog in his lap. He entered the national racing scene on a number of occasions, racing in NASCAR Grand National and Late Model events. But he is best known for his local racing activities in and around New York State. He was the 1965, 1966 and 1967 modified track champion at Spencer Speedway.   The 61st season of auto racing at Spencer Speedway and Dragway came to an end last Saturday, November 21, with the annual awards banquet, held this year at the Palmyra V.F.W. in Palmyra, NY. The event was emceed by track announcers Dan Turner and Roger Miller. On the NASCAR side the oval champions were crowned. Mike Leaty, the former 2007 Modified champion, picked up his first Sunoco Modified championship. Kevin Timmerman came home second in points followed by Tommy Catalano.
